PULSAR (SEIKO) GEN 1 (FIRST GENERATION) QUARTZ MILITARY ISSUED CHRONOGRAPH WATCH, BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE (RAF) / ROYAL NAVY ISSUED - 2005, 07 or 08. In near MINT condition for an issued watch, BRAND NEW BLACK NYLON NATO STRAP, and BRAND NEW SWISS RENATA BATTERY, PROFESSIONALLY FITTED! This watch was issued to a serving member of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) or Royal Navy (RN) in 2005 (x3), 2007 (x3) and 2008 (x1) and as such they have minor evidence of previous use, such as slight scuffs/scratches to the case and glass, but are in near mint condition for an issued watch.Given the issue years, they may well have seen service in Afghanistan. If there is a specific issue year you would like please let me know, and if it is still available I will send you that one. Chronograph watches such as these are usually only issued to personnel who actually need them, such as fast jet (RAF) and helicopter (RN) pilots, or navigators. They are all keeping perfect Quartz time, and are in full working order. Comes on brand new and unused black nylon 20mm NATO strap, with brand new quality Swiss Renata 395 battery professionally fitted. This is the previous British armed forces issue quartz chronograph watch, known as the Pulsar Gen 1 (Generation 1) to distinguish it from the later Pulsar Generation 2, that replaced it. The older Gen 1 seems to be a bit rarer.
Pulsar is a sub-brand of Seiko and the same movement is used in Seiko chronographs. It features large numerals on the dial, in a classic chronograph layout, plus a date at 3:00, fixed bars, 100m water resistance, and a Pulsar V657 movement. Even though they are rated 100m water resistant, and every effort has been taken to ensure ongoing water resistance (eg silicone oil used on seals during battery change), as I do not have a pressure tester to confirm water resistance to 100m, it is strongly recommended that they are not used underwater and any submersion under water is at the owners risk.
The watch has fully military issue markings (NSN - NATO Stock Number) on the back as follows. > "Broad arrow" denoting Ministry of Defence/Crown property. The stock code 6645-99 comprises 2 parts. 6645 is the NATO equipment code for a Time Measuring Instrument.
99 is the NATO UK country code. He number beneath, is the item number which refers to this particular model of watch. The 5 digit number beneath that is the serial number of this specific watch and the two digit number at the bottom, the year of issue- in this case "05, 07 or 08" indicating it was issued in 2005,07 or 08. The case back also has the following engraved on it WATER RESISTANT 10 BAR ST.
The brushed stainless steel matte case measures 42 mm in diameter with crown, 39mm without and is 11 mm thick. The lug-to-lug measurement is 48 mm and the lug width is 20 mm. The lugs are straight and it has has fixed bars, which is common for military issued watches. The crown has three positions,'in' for normal use, position 1 (pulled out) for quick date adjustment and position 2 (pulled out further) for time adjustment and subdial re-calibration. Takes the widely available 395 size battery and has just been professionally fitted with a brand new Swiss made Renata 395 battery.
The Pulsar Gen 1 chronograph is powered by the Pulsar V657 movement with date and chronograph complication, measuring events from 1/10s to 59min 59s. The dial is matte black. It has the railroad track minute marker on the rehaut with minute/second numbers at hour markers. The hours are marked with Arabic numerals at 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10,11 - except the 12 o'clock marker has the traditional triangle and at 3 o'clock due to the date window. The dial is uncluttered and it makes reading the time easy.
The dial is signed'Pulsar' and'Chronograph 100M L' at 3 o'clock. L' inside a circle indicates the type of luminous material used. In this case it is Luminova.
The date is displayed via a cut-out at the 3 o'clock position. There is a white outline around the cut-out to enhance the window.
The date is black numbers on white background. Dots on the numbers are luminous, as are the hour and minute hands and the lume is bright. The hands are of the sword type design and filled with lume. The hands are white coated to reduce the reflectio. N and are heavily lumed.
The sweep second hand is white as are the sub dial hands. The minute hand extends all the way to the minute markers and the sweep second hand is just as long. The hour hand extends to the Arabic hour markers and this makes telling the time at a glance easy as the hands are sufficiently differentiated by length. Chrono sub dials are as follows. 12 o'clock - 1/10s - this hand just zips round in a super cool way, and does so for the first 10 minutes of an event timing, before stopping to save battery life.
When the timer is stopped it whizzes round to the right 1/10s position. 6 o'clock - chrono seconds counter. 9 o'clock sub dial - minute counter - times evets upto 60 mins. To use chrono push top pusher (2 o'clock) to start and push again to stop, to reset push pusher 2 (4 o'clock). Chrono can also measure split events.
All the hands align and reset perfectly. However in the event of this not being the case (eg after a battery change) this can easily be changed by pulling the crown to number 2 position pressing pusher 1 for 2 seconds to select the dial you want to move and then using pusher 2 to align it. This is a brilliant everyday "do it all" watch with excellent military pedigree and added cool factor, in near mint condition! All in all a stunning PULSAR (SEIKO) GEN 1 (FIRST GENERATION) QUARTZ MILITARY ISSUED CHRONOGRAPH WATCH, BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE (RAF) / ROYAL NAVY ISSUED - 2005, 07 or 08.
